So, band camp was July 16th-27th. I won't lie, I stayed inside the whole time. I'm not sure if i specified before, but I play percussion, and in marching band, I play in pit. Most of the time I play marimba. Oh how I love it so much.
Since I've never really been taught how to do 4 mallets or anything, this will be the first year for me actually to perform with 4 mallets. Last year, I played 3, but that was only for the closer (less than half of the movement too...that irked me a bit). But this year, I have my 1st movement, the opener, in and out of 3 mallets, second movement, the ballad, is just 2, but its so worth just being 2. The song is gorgeous. The song was written for us. It's a beautiful version of Letter from Home by Pat Metheny. Then, my 3rd movement, the closer, is mainly a 4 mallet piece, with some of the moving parts mainly 2 mallet. Anyway, I'm excited to see the reaction from people. They'll be blown away by pit this year. We've never been this good honesetly. And with KMEA changing the part of percussion and guard judging just to musical effect and visual effect, it kinda sucks, but our marching band needs all the help we can get. Crittenden Co. of course, is not the best place to be in band. It is definitely not Murray or Lafayette, but we have some really good individual musicians....like myself.
While at band camp a lot happened.. My percussion teacher was one of my friends from Murray's community band this summer. He was a great teacher. We still have a lot of visual things to work on, but we had a lot to work on, and we learned everything within a couple of days.
I did have a rough patch though. Even if the ballad is the absolute easiest piece I've played in my life, it was the hardest to learn. It's really a sort of love song, and psychologically I'm pretty sure I was just having a hard time learning it just for that fact. A heart broken girl does not do well with love songs... So, at one point I ended up in the instrument room crying for a couple minutes. But now, now that I've learned the song, I think it's so beautiful.
Other than the musical parts of band camp, there was playing horsewaffel...(a game which will never be explained, for fear of such fun being let out to other bands), talking to my lovely friends, and just in general learning about myself a lot. Since having probably the worst summer of my life, I can say band was the only thing to make it bearable. But I'm thankful for what time I had band. Now I'm all, having a bad summer again, but thankfully I have band practice and it'll be marvelous yet again. Maybe even my percussion teacher will be there :)
